With three albums in the works, 2027 is shaping up to be a big year for bassist Natalie Boeyink. Batuquê Trio's long-awaited second album, Canopy, featuring their signature Caribbean-tinged samba and Latin jazz sound, will be released on the Patois label. Her debut record as bandleader, with original compositions and arrangements of David Baker, Hoagy Carmichael, and Percy Heath, will also be released by Patois. And the regions finest salsa band, Salsoteca, has been in the studio working on their first album, expected to be released in late 2027.
Natalie is an accomplished musician, educator and composer based in Bloomington, IN, working primarily in jazz and Latin idioms. In 2023, she joined the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as Associate Professor of Jazz, leading a large jazz ensemble, and teaching courses in jazz history and pedagogy. From 2015-2023 she was based in North Carolina, serving on the jazz faculty at UNCW.
Natalie completed her doctorate in music education at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and she holds a MM in Jazz Performance (University of Louisville), and a BM in Jazz Studies (Indiana University). Her dissertation was titled, "An Analysis and Description of Female Jazz Instrumentalists." Natalie is an active jazz bassist, adjudicator and educator and she is the former director of the Attica Strings Project, based in Attica, Indiana.
The Callipygian Collective is Natalie's latest project. This group features musical talent nurtured in Kentucky, North Carolina and Indiana. The group primarily performs Natalie's original jazz compositions, and was recently featured at the debut Hoosier Jazz Festival.
Batuquê Trio is her seasoned collaboration with drummer Andy Smith and pianist Jamaal Baptiste. Focusing on contemporary Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and Caribbean jazz, the trio frequently appears at jazz festivals as performers and clinicians. The trio's first CD, Transparency, was released in January 2015. Their second album, Canopy, is forthcoming in 2027.
